4 OATMEAL RECIPES WITH A TWIST

Since starting the 'My Healthy Choice' thing I've been on the hunt for healthy food to add to my diet and oatmeal was one of those. I know that in the UK and US it's the granny breakfast nobody wants to have, but it's not very famous in Italy and actually I've never attempted to cook it at home until last month.

I must say I like it very much. I love that it's a warm and hearty food that will keep you full till lunch but it doesn't make you feel like you've had a whole turkey for breakfast. I'm also a big fan of its insipidity, if that's a thing, because I feel like it's a sort of blank canvas base that you can personalized as you please and I always have a bit of fun in the morning choosing which topping to use or which ingredient to add.

Speaking of that, here's four of my latest experiments that I hope you will find useful or inspiring.

» HOT CHOCOLATE OATMEL WITH PEARS

When I said - or typed, whatever - experiments I really meant it, because I basically just pop in my kitchen and use whatever I find, without any idea of what I'm doing. This was one of those days and I just decided to mix oatmeal, milk and ground cocoa together, getting this thick creamish thing that tastes so similar to hot chocolate. I then added baked pear chunks in the mixture and topped it all with a few raw pear bits because we all know how good pears & chocolate taste together and, if you don't, just try this recipe and I guarantee you'll agree.

» SPICED OATMEAL WITH WALNUTS, CHOCOLATE & HONEY

Oh, I remember that Sunday morning: I woke up and there was no fruit in the fridge. No. Fruit. It was an awful awful moment for me since I need fruit in the morning, I need it in my oatmeal, but, since I'm a strong cat I managed to handle that horrible situation and find my way through it, using everything that was left in my cupboard. I cooked the oatmeal using loads of ground cinnamon & ginger, just to give it that hearty feel, then topped it with some raw walnuts, a few honey drops and some little chocolate chips. Oh boy, was it good. Well, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining.

» OATMEAL TOPPED WITH CARAMELIZED PEARS & MELTED MILK CHOCOLATE

By now you should've learnt that for me chocolate fits in the 'healthy food' category. Ok, I know it's not a proper 'healthy' thing but everyone needs a treat now and then and this one up here is delicious. Seriously, just writing about it makes me drool. Anyway, I cooked the oatmeal as usual, you know, milk, a bit of cinnamon, that's all. In the meanwhile, I put the pear chunks in a pan to soften them and then added a bit of sugar to caramelized 'em. I finished it off adding some milk chocolate chunks that melted from the heat of the oatmeal and the pears.
Now excuse me while I go and wipe my watery mouth.

» BANANA OATMEAL TOPPED WITH A CRUMBLED COOKIE

My favorite way to have oatmeal is with bananas. I add them while it's still cooking and they mixed so wonderfully creating this thick blob that tastes trés bien. I then sprinkled a crumbled cookie just to add that extra crunchiness but you don't really need that. Just remember that it's not as good if you mistake cinnamon with ground chili.
Don't ask, just trust me.
