D.I.Y. » LAYERED CANDLE

I'm a candle junkie and that's a given.
I love my candles so much when they burn out and you get some wax that still hasn't melted, it breaks my heart to throw it away. This is why a few months ago I decided I would have melted all my candle leftovers and create a giant layered diy candle.

What you'll need »
  • Mason jar
  • Candle leftovers
  • Candle wick with metal base (I got mine from a craft shop)
  • Hot glue
  • Two pencils
  • Two elastic bands
  • One pot with some water
Here's how »

  1. First you need to prep your container: wash your mason jar, dry it well, and then stick the wick to its bottom using hot glue. Be sure it is centered and let it cool.
  2. Take the pencils and assemble them together using the elastic bands, then take the wick and put it in-between the pencils, balancing them on the jar, as you can see in the picture. This will keep the wick straight while you create your candle.
  3. Now take your pot with water and put in your candle leftovers. If they're in a jar put the whole thing in, if they come without container you want to put them into a glass or a bowl and then in the pot.
  4. Put the pot on the stove and wait for the wax to melt, stirring occasionally to accelerate the process.
  5. Once it's melted, pour the wax into your mason jar, careful to avoid the pencils.
  6. Wait for it to cool down completely and then repeat from point 3 with all your leftovers! Remember that the wax needs to be completely cool before adding some more, if you want to have defined layers.
As I said, I made this over a couple months, adding my leftovers as I was collecting them. It took just a couple minutes to do one layer and it was a fun little activity to do during the week-ends. If you want, you can melt and pour a whole candle if you don't like the packaging, or even use wax flakes and essential oils to create your very own candle!
The possibility are endless and as you could see it is very easy, just be careful to don't burn yourself with hot wax while you're at it!
